First United Methodist Church
DES MOINES, IA
In 2006, First United Methodist Church began a sanctuary and balcony restoration project with a straightforward goal: preserve the integrity of the original space and restore it with the level of craftsmanship it deserved. This was never about modernizing history or forcing new ideas into an old building. The work started with understanding what was already there. A detailed historical paint study uncovered the sanctuary’s original color palette, giving the team a clear direction rooted in the building’s past instead of assumptions or interpretation.
From there, every decision followed that same disciplined approach. Decorative painting was completed to reflect the period and architectural character of the church without becoming excessive or distracting. The goal was consistency, balance, and respect for the original design intent that defined the space for generations.
Plaster repair demanded the same level of care. Existing walls and ceilings were restored methodically, with damaged areas rebuilt to match original conditions rather than simply covered or replaced. Decorative plaster details and classical column elements were carefully recreated to maintain continuity throughout the sanctuary and balconies.
Projects like this take patience, coordination, and people willing to slow down enough to do the work right. No shortcuts. No guessing. Just skilled craftsmanship focused on preserving a space built to last.
