The Krause Gateway Center stands at the edge of downtown Des Moines as a project built around precision, coordination, and purposeful design. Rising above the Western Gateway district, the building’s four distinct planes create a strong architectural presence defined by openness, simplicity, and light. Designed to bring multiple companies together under shared ownership, the facility was built to encourage collaboration, movement, and the everyday interactions that push ideas forward.

Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with OPN Architects, the 160,000-square-foot structure responds directly to the surrounding city grid and urban environment. The upper levels rotate nearly sixteen degrees to align with the northern street orientation, while the lower floors stay grounded within the existing downtown framework. Expansive glass systems, protected by deep overhangs, flood the building with natural light while maintaining uninterrupted views across the Des Moines skyline.

Inside, a 29-foot glass lobby anchors the experience and connects six levels of open workspaces, meeting areas, and integrated amenities designed for flexibility and day-to-day functionality. Exterior gathering areas, a native prairie rooftop, and pedestrian-focused site planning reinforce the project’s connection to the city around it.

Delivering a project of this scale required disciplined execution from start to finish. Over three years, more than 1,000 tradespeople and 90 design and construction partners worked in lockstep through constant communication, coordination, and problem-solving — bringing together architecture, craftsmanship, and performance without compromise.
