The design of the Therkildsen Industrial Engineering Building at Iowa State University was built around a simple idea — create a space that strengthens connection, supports innovation, and improves the way students, faculty, and researchers work together every day. From the beginning, the project focused on building more than classrooms and offices. The goal was to create an environment that reflects the collaborative nature of industrial engineering itself while giving the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering a stronger identity across campus.

Inspired by the systems-based thinking behind the engineering field, the facility was designed to function like a connected mechanism where teaching, research, collaboration, and community all work together with purpose. Every space inside the building was intentionally planned to support flexibility, interaction, and day-to-day usability. Open gathering areas, collaborative workspaces, research environments, and social spaces were integrated throughout the facility to encourage communication and create a stronger sense of community among students and faculty.

A refined material palette, healthy building materials, and design decisions aligned with LEED Gold standards help create an environment that feels clean, modern, and welcoming without losing functionality. Generous natural light and expansive views throughout the building improve the overall experience while reinforcing a campus environment built around learning, problem-solving, and shared momentum.
